BOOK OF ABSTRACTS
We are pleased to invite you to participate in the International Scientific Conference „Local Responses to Global Challenges – architecture, materials, identity, DIY”, which will take place on April 25, 2025, online, on the MS Teams platform.
The main objective of the conference is an interdisciplinary exchange of experiences in the field of creating and functioning of architecture in the face of global challenges, with particular emphasis on the role of local solutions, DIY* and learning through practice („design build studio”**).
We want to create a space for discussion open to people who study, teach and solve architectural problems in practice.
CONFERENCE ISSUES
Designing architecture in the local dimension takes on a new meaning in the face of global challenges – progressive urbanization and growing climate changes, Projects originated from a specific place and tradition can also respond to problems of supra-regional importance. The specific needs of individual regions, geographical and social constraints generate diverse architectural solutions – sometimes marginalized today as traditional or vernacular. Local solutions, both past and emerging today, can be treated as a source of knowledge and inspire innovations – useful and adaptable on a global scale.
Contemporary times pose great challenges to architects. There is an ongoing discussion about the role of architecture in the face of the so-called multi-crisis. Knowledge and skills that go beyond technocratically understood design are needed today in order to be able to respond to the real needs of the community. In this context, the experience of direct contact with people, working with one’s own hands, group decision-making, or knowledge of the practical aspects of building are invaluable.
„Design build studio” is a method of teaching architecture by designing and making objects by students with their own hands. It is a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge, thanks to which they develop complementarily. It can also be a demanding exercise in group work, in a real environment, and a deep, immersive experience of working with people – the so-called recipients of architecture. In the context of the idea of locality, „design build studio” is an effective learning model, enabling the acquisition of knowledge and skills, while creating projects that have a real impact on the local communities in which they operate.
*DIY – an acronym for the phrase „do it yourself”.

THEMATIC AXES OF THE CONFERENCE
- Changes and local threats related to global problems;
- Possibilities of the learning through the practice – the design build studio;
- Functional and spatial changes in local rural, urban and metropolitan areas;
- Ecological, energy-saving and intelligent solutions;
- Attractiveness of architecture in the context of local identity;
- Sustainable architecture in the local context;
- Local construction technologies, natural building materials;
- Contemporary challenges in the design of public spaces, prototyping, acupuncture, installations and happenings.
We would like to consider the subject of the conference from various points of view, assuming that the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas allows us to shape new notions and develop the most innovative approach. For this reason, we invite a wide range of students, scientists, specialists and all those interested in shaping local architecture to the conference.

CONFERENCE FEE:
Participation in the conference is free of charge.
CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION:
The condition for participation is to fill in the online Participation Application Form.
PREPARATION OF PAPERS
The paper in Polish or English that implements the objectives of the Conference should be adapted to the expected time of the presentation (about 10 minutes). A PDF presentation file with a size not exceeding 5 MB can be sent to the Conference e-mail address.
