The International Scientific Conference
M Ia S To (City) –  Model   Idea   Structure   Identity

17th – 19th March 2025 / on-line
CONFERENCE PROGRAME
BOOK OF ABSTRACTS

The main objective of the international scientific conference MIaSTo – Model Idea Structure Identity is an interdisciplinary and multifaceted exchange of experiences of scientists and practitioners on the essence of urban planning – transformation, modeling of urban structures, their identity, architecture and management methods of urban development. These issues are related to the scientific and research work of the late Prof. Dr. inż. arch. Zbigniew Zuziak, to whose memory the conference was dedicated.

An important reference of these considerations is the concern for spatial order and improvement of the quality of life of residents, as well as the context of statutory changes – especially the new Law on Spatial Planning and Development being implemented in Poland.

Therefore, during one of the sessions of the conference we have planned an expert panel devoted to practical issues. Members of the Society of Polish Town Planners Cracow Division will present, in the light of the amendment of the Act on Planning and Spatial Development, issues concerning:

  • Integrated investment plans,

  • Balancing of investment areas in general plans,

  •  Planning recording techniques in the local plan, master plan and development strategy,

  • Further evolution of spatial issues and proposals for regulatory changes put forward by the professional community.

    In this session, experts will also present the possibilities of using GIS software to visualise and analyse spatial data, as well as the practical possibilities of using databases of the Central Statistical Office in spatial planning, pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of the data acquired and processed.

This is the 11th conference in the series Idea of the City, Time, Place, Form.

CONFERENCE ISSUES

Cities are the main centers of development of civilization. They are places of population concentration, nodes of innovation, culture, social development and management of the modern economy. Their rapid development in recent decades is evident in the expansion of the suburban zone as well as the internal transformation of urban areas. The consequences of this process in the structure of modern cities include progressive suburbanization, the development of polycentric and dispersed urban form and functional and spatial transformations.

In Poland, the 2003 Law on Spatial Planning and Development resulted in progressive spatial chaos. The amendment to the law, passed two decades later, in 2023, introduced planning instruments that, at least in theory, should respond to contemporary challenges of sustainable shaping of urban spaces and their surroundings. In the context of the diverse phenomena in the structure of cities, the introduced instrumentality for planners and local government units implies a number of questions about:

  • opportunities to control changes in the urban structure in accordance with the principles of sustainable development;
  • formation of the city’s identity in relation to the values of cultural heritage;
  • formulation of urban planning standards;
  • formation of the boundaries of urban agglomerations and the rules of transport and communication service;
  • opportunities and rules for controlling structural changes.

THEMATIC AXES OF THE CONFERENCE

  1. Modeling of urban structures and their legibility in urban form;
  2. Logic of formation of urban structure systems;
  3. Functional and spatial changes in urban structure;
  4. Management of urban development taking into account territorial marketing;
  5. Methods of planning and controlling the development of cities and agglomerations;
  6. Attractiveness of city space in the context of cultural identity;
  7. Ecological, energy-saving and intelligent solutions in cities.

We would like to consider the theme of the conference outlined in this way from different points of view, assuming that interdisciplinary exchange of views allows to shape new insights and develop the most innovative approaches. Therefore, to the conference we invite a wide range of scientists, specialists, local government officials and all those interested in the formation and quality of the space of cities and agglomerations.
